Behind the Build: Creating Sojourn
For years, this building has been a space for community. First, a general store serving the village, then a bridal boutique for the last decade — always a place where people came together. Now, as we transform it into Sojourn Pilates, that sense of gathering remains at the heart of what we’re creating.
Restoring the space
Bringing Sojourn to life has been a process of stripping back to rebuild. Right now, our priority is returning the space to a blank slate — pulling up floors, removing wallpaper, and taking down the old kitchen. Evenings are spent meeting with contractors and weekends are for hands-on work, ripping out what’s no longer needed to make way for something new.
We’re incredibly grateful for the extra help we have — this project is a true labour of love, and every step is moving us closer to the vision we have for Sojourn.
Overcoming Challenges: Flood Damage & Futureproofing
Anyone familiar with the village knows that flooding is an ongoing issue in this area. It’s something we can’t ignore — and it’s been one of the biggest challenges in our renovation process.
We’ve been deep in emails with the council, drain inspections and researching flood-prevention solutions to protect the studio long-term. While it’s a frustrating part of the journey, we’re committed to making sure Sojourn is a space that’s built to last.
The Vision: A City-Quality Studio in a Village Location
Sojourn is more than just a Pilates studio — it’s a curated experience. We’re designing the space to reflect our brand, with a minimalist, Japanese-inspired aesthetic. Think concrete, bamboo finishes and an atmosphere that’s both calming and energising.
Infrared Mat Studio – Heated panels installed along the walls for a deeper, more restorative practice.
Reformer Space – Six reformers, positioned to create flow and symmetry.
Wellness Lounge – A seating area with curated wellness drinks, perfect for pre- or post-class connection.
Sojourn is about balance — strength and stillness, energy and restoration. From the photo-ready interiors to the immersive playlists, we want to create something that feels as inspiring as a city studio, but with the warmth of a village space.
What’s Next?
Right now, we’re deep in the renovation phase, but every ripped-up floorboard and late-night planning session brings us closer to opening our doors. It’s a lot of work — but we can’t wait to welcome you into Sojourn.
Follow along for more updates, and we’ll see you in the studio soon.
